Emily Ennis Mattei

CEO + principal designer

master of interior design

A New Englander at heart, Emily has spent most of her life living and working near the coast or on the water.  She earned a BS in Elementary Education with minors in both Psychology and Studio Art at the University of Vermont. The combination of studies and her love of art led her to study design at the Boston Architectural College.  In January of 2010, Emily graduated from the Boston Architectural College with a Masters of Interior Design.

For over 18 years, Emily has worked in high-end residential design and healthcare design for firms in Portland, Boston and on Nantucket Island. In 2014, she launched e4 Interior Design.

Prior to her design career, Emily was an outdoor educator leading expeditions for Outward Bound. As a Coast Guard licensed sailboat Captain, Emily led 14-day sailing and hiking expeditions for middle school students in the Boston Harbor Islands and the White Mountains of New Hampshire.  During her summers while attending design school, she worked as a First Mate on a fishing charter boat on Nantucket. Emily’s love and appreciation for the outdoors and coastal environments continues to impact the interior spaces that she designs. These spaces often highlight the adjacent outdoor living spaces and pay attention to the environmental impact of design.

Being the mother of two active and curious sons has provided Emily with daily experiences that continue to inform the practicality of her design choices for her clients. These observations have heightened her interest in creating beautiful, comfortable, functional, and safe homes for families to live and grow.

Emily’s positive outlook and infectious energy aid in an enjoyable design process and strong relationships with her clients.

Anthony John Mattei

CFO + procurement manager

Anthony is a transplant from Western Massachusetts, but has spent almost a third of his life living and working in Maine. During summers of high school and college, he worked for his family at Goose Cove Lodge on Deer Isle. After graduating from the University of Massachusetts, he spent two seasons commercially river guiding for Unicorn River Expeditions on the Kennebec River. His love of skiing and rivers pulled him westward, where he spent nearly a decade chasing champagne powder and exploring the red rock canyons of Utah. The desire to be closer to family and find his “New England girl”, brought him back to the East Coast in 2007.

In his career before e4, Anthony worked at several high-end restaurants in Utah and locally at Hugo’s in Portland, under James Beard Chef, Rob Evans. His hospitality experiences built his appreciation for fine cuisine and honed his customer service skills. He then spent eight great years managing the studio, sales, and production along-side his closest friends at Alison Evans Ceramics. There he wore many hats and learned valuable skills for running a small, successful, creative business.

As e4 scaled, Emily and Anthony both realized the time had come to truly make e4 a family business. Anthony joined his wife full time in January 2019, after several years of managing the business finances behind the scenes. In addition to the finances, Anthony also manages all of the procurement, logistics, and coordination of furniture and goods for each project. Their partnership in life and business have provided awesome opportunity to design a great life for their two sons.

When Anthony is not in the office, he can be found swimming at the local Y, playing golf, skiing, spending time outdoors exploring, and cooking for friends and family.
